After the Storm Passes

Spring, roughly March through June, is hail season on this part of the I-35 corridor. Most hail reported inside New Braunfels has been quarter-size or smaller, though larger stones fall farther west: on June 8, 2023, NOAA's Storm Prediction Center logged golf-ball hail, 1.75 inches across, near Bulverde in western Comal County.

Wind and ice matter too. The National Weather Service office for Austin and San Antonio estimated straight-line winds up to 80 mph from northeast Bexar County into southwest Comal County on April 28, 2021. Earlier that spring, on March 22–23, an EF-1 tornado on the west side of Canyon Lake, TX tore part of the roof off one house. In February 2021, the office measured 5.5 inches of snow at New Braunfels and 6.2 at Canyon Lake, in what it called an "unprecedented and historical eight-day period of winter weather."

What Gets Done

  • Hail bruising. Soft dents, missing granules and dinged vents or gutters are read up close, slope by slope.
  • Wind-lifted or missing shingles. Creased tabs and bare patches near ridges and edges let rain in long after the wind dies.
  • Ice and snow aftermath. Ice dams at the gutters and attic condensation can leave stains that show weeks later.
  • Limb strikes. Oak branches over Hill Country roofs can puncture the decking itself.
  • Dated photos and an estimate. The roofer records what they find and writes an itemized estimate you can keep or send to your insurer.

What to Expect

  1. Stay safe first. Keep off the roof; take photos from the ground and note the date.
  2. Reach a roofer. Send the form or call (830) 555-0149 to be put in touch with one independent local roofer.
  3. Inspection and photos. The roofer checks slopes, flashing, gutters and attic, then shows you the findings.
  4. Written estimate, your decision. You receive an itemized scope. Whether to file a claim, and when to sign anything, is up to you.

Reasons to Ask Here First

Nobody from this site will knock on your door or hurry you, and one roofer gets your details, not a crowd. Before hiring anyone, ask for proof of liability insurance, a local address, references and written warranties.

Be careful with contracts signed on the porch. For one of $25 or more signed at your home, Texas usually lets you cancel in writing by midnight of the third business day afterward. There's no extra window if your insurer later denies the claim, so read every page first.

What Your Insurer Will Ask For

Most insurers want the date of loss, photos, a description of the damage and often a contractor's estimate. A roofer can supply the photos and estimate. The claim stays between you and your insurance company: you file it, talk with the adjuster and settle it. Under Texas law, a contractor working on your house can't represent you in the claim or negotiate it.

Texas law also makes the policyholder pay the deductible, and any roofer's offer to waive, rebate, pay or absorb it is illegal. Policy or claim-handling questions can go to the Texas Department of Insurance Help Line, 800-252-3439.

Frequently Asked

Does quarter-size hail damage a roof?

Sometimes. It depends on the shingles' age and type, the wind behind the hail and the angle of each slope; sun-worn shingles bruise more easily. A close inspection is the only way to know, and a careful roofer will say plainly when there's nothing worth claiming.

A roofer offered to cover my deductible. Is that allowed?

No. In Texas the homeowner pays the deductible, and a roofer can't legally offer to waive, rebate or absorb it. Treat that offer as a reason to keep looking, and report it to the Texas Attorney General's Consumer Protection Hotline at 800-621-0508.

My claim was denied after I signed. Can I cancel?

Texas has no special cancellation right tied to a denied claim. What applies is the contract you signed, plus the general three-business-day right for contracts signed at home. Read the cancellation terms and any insurance clause before signing, not after the adjuster visits.

Should my next roof be impact-resistant?

Class 4 impact-resistant shingles are an option, not a requirement. The Texas Department of Insurance says each company sets its own discount for them, and many Texas insurers offer one. Get your insurer's figure first, then weigh it against the higher material cost.
